Wow, where did that six weeks go?

It really has been six weeks since I posted, erm….sorry about that.

I have been really busy, setting up a new business, working on my fitness, doing my masters, working, making sure I don’t neglect my husband and friends and everything else that life entails.

But all in all, life is good, if a little hectic. I will try to post a little more often, as I enjoy the headspace that blogging gives me.

This weekend I did the Henley Horseplay Notorious Night Race, which was awesome, although exceptionally exhausting. I raced on Saturday evening, it is now Tuesday and I am still very stiff and sore! My calves are far too tight, they scream every time I stand up!

Here I am before hand – clean and excited! In case you are wondering about the rosette (and the headscarf which you can see in the other pictures) it is becuase it was the horseplay race! Lots of people made a real effort in the dressing up, so I felt like a bit of a cheat.

coming out of the scramble net

This was the hardest thing I think I have ever done, we quickly had to run through water, very near the start and I have never run through water before, let alone run more than 10K with wet shoes. There were jumps and vertical hills through the woods and trees. At night! When I got to the end and had to go over a waist high jump, through water and then got to a scramble net I shouted ‘you have GOT to be joking!’ Quite frankly they were lucky there wasn’t a ‘fucking’ in there, but I was aware there were small children waiting for their parents. But I wasn’t sure that if I went down onto my knees to get through the net that I was going to be able to get back up again.

The very last thing was this

this is actually quite high to get up!

and I was at the end of my tether by that, point, I heaved myself up and then ran through the finish line.

grinning like a lunatic

As you can see by the end of the race I was soaking wet and filthy dirty, but grinning like a lunatic with sheer pride and happiness. I am not a fast runner and I have never done anything as challenging as this before, but I was delighted to have completed it. My time was 2hr 6min, which I don’t think is too bad, especially as in some parts there were bottlenecks and I had to walk up some of the hills, I was even contemplating using my hands as they were not far off the ground. There was some hills that I couldn’t run down because it was too steep and I have never run anything like that before. I did think about dropping to the ground and going down it ‘sausage roll’ style, but didn’t think I would be too popular if I wiped people out on my way down.

The fastest person did it at around 50 mins, by which point I had just about reached the drinks station at the halfway point. I cannot even contemplate running at that speed.  But that would have meant they would have completed it before it got properly dark, so actually they were cheating, as declared by me ;-)

I have to thank my wonderful other half who drove me there, waited in the dark for me to emerge from the woods and then helped clean my feet when I had a blister/cut and I wanted to disinfect it (there was a serious bog at one point on the course). He hates feet, so this was a real labour of love!

Multiple posts on one day

In case you are wondering why I sometimes post twice in one day, the simple answer is I have messed up!

I tried to schedule some posts, then ended up posting them all in the same day by mistake. Other times I forget I have scheduled them and write another post!

There is a backlog of written posts at the moment and I have lots of ideas for new ones. I am in a writing frame of mind at the moment that is for sure! What I have done is scheduled back ones for Monday and Friday and I will try to remember to post other ones on the other days.

Hopefully I won’t burn out and end up with no posts later in the year!

2010 in review

I got this email from WordPress today, just as I was contemplating my next blog post! One to follow soon, but thank you to everyone for their comments about my last post!

I am pleased at the results, especially as I am rather sporadic in my posting. So thank you to everyone who reads this post and puts up with my erratic writing.

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

Why I want a….envy

So, having just said no more posts until I get back I immediately contradict myself. Well – it isn’t the first time and it sure won’t be the last!

This is the first of what I hope will be a new and sustained project for me, some creative writing. At the moment, they will be based on prompts given by one of two places – Sleep is for the weak, or Judith’s Room. The reason I say ‘sustained project’ is I was told this week that I have a three-minute attention span and while I don’t think I am THAT bad, I realise that I do get bored easily and want t to start a new project! So, anyway, first attempt for years at some creative writing – with the prompt of “why I want…” and, rather coincidentally – Envy.

Driving down the road from spring through to early winter my heart is continually attacked by pangs of envy and wanting. The doppler effect effecting me deeply, as my head whips around, and back, and round again as they fly past me, all leather and elegance.

Since I gave up my motorbike, a beautiful Suzuki 600 Bandit, two years ago to get a sensible and boring car, my heart aches for one. The freedom they bring, the sheer exhilaration of going down the road at 70 miles per hour *cough 100 cough* as the air pushes against you, making me feel like if I threw my hands up I would gracefully somersault off of the back and fly down the road, free as a bird.

The danger and adrenaline bring a thrill to me which I just can’t match without my two wheels and big engine. The way I and the bike become one and I wove through traffic, getting to the destination quicker, even if frequent stops were needed because it is just so tiring. Or when it is raining so hard that my knickers are soaking wet, even through supposing water-proof, Gore-Tex clothing. Even when I have stupidly gone out in the winter and ended up getting snowed on to the extend that I feel like I have been frozen in position and will never move again.

I know that it is much more practical to have a car, that motorbikes are dangerous, but it doesn’t stop me. Even seeing silly boys (always boys) in shorts with no gloves, which makes me physically feel sick in sympathy for what is going to happen to their body if they come off, doesn’t stop me. My heart aches for the adrenaline and exhilaration which comes from riding a bike.

One day I will have my shiny red bike, with matching red leathers and I am going to fly around a race track, get my knee down and then drive home down the motorway making another girl envious as she stares out of her boring, sensible car, with pure lust in her eyes as she catches mine and smiles.

Bad blogger

Hello everyone!

Sorry it has been such a long time since I posted.  I hadn’t intended it to be, but it has been less than you think – my last post didn’t turn up in my RSS feeds, so there is a chance that it hasn’t in yours either. Check it out here.

I have been getting my head around being a teacher and phew it has been very hard. I knew this was a rough school, but I hadn’t realised quite what this meant in reality. I have been actually scared on one occasion and reduced to tears twice already. And I am not a teary sort of person. I have been thoroughly astounded by the rudeness of the children and shocked by their behaviour. Then I find out their home background and it all becomes startlingly clear.

Since I left my parent’s house 13 years ago I have lived in two different red light districts (not intentionally I found out afterwards!), one in a scummy, damp bedsit in Huddersfield, one in the heart of Brixton. I have also lived in a rough bit of Slough and the East End of London too, again in the rough bit, not the swanky bit and now I am living in a not very nice bit of Essex. And in all of these places I never encountered children very much, or at least they hadn’t cropped up on my radar. I guess even though I have lived in some rough areas it is not the same as being brought up in them.

It has been an eye-opening and humbling experience for me. I have to say I am pleased that my morning routine of meditation is paying off, I haven’t lost my temper and I have remained calm with the children (crying in the toilets after wards doesn’t count!). It is getting easier now that I am in my fourth week there – they are getting to know and trust me a little more and are being slightly less testing in the lessons.

I don’t want this to turn into a teaching blog – I am thinking about setting up a separate blog for that (it won’t be linked to this one if I do as that will be a professional one), but I just wanted to explain my absence and promise that I will get around for the lack of posts. I am on summer holidays as of Thursday afternoon (woo hoo!),  so I will hopefully be posting more. Don’t forget to look at my last post – Oh bunt off!
